The legacy archive covered NVMe drives the way it covered everything else: paste the vendor’s spec sheet, add an affiliate link. The Samsung 970 PRO post — the newest page on the old site — was three sentences of Samsung’s own marketing and nothing a buyer could act on.
This guide is the rewrite. It answers the question people actually ask when they are shopping M.2 NVMe: what do these numbers mean, and which ones should change what I buy?
First: is NVMe even worth it for you?
NVMe drives are faster on paper than SATA SSDs — real-world sequential reads of 3,000–7,000 MB/s versus ~550 MB/s. But you only feel that in tasks that move big files: video exports, large game level loads, database work, photo catalogs.
For booting Windows, opening apps, and everyday multitasking, a good SATA SSD and a good NVMe SSD feel nearly identical, because both are so far beyond what a hard drive delivers. If your machine has no M.2 slot at all (common on desktops before ~2015 and budget laptops), don’t contort your build around NVMe — a 2.5” SATA drive is the honest upgrade.
If your motherboard has an M.2 slot that runs at PCIe 3.0 x4 or better, and you do any of the big-file tasks above, NVMe is a legitimate step up — just buy the right one.
The form factor check that saves returns
“M.2 NVMe” is not one thing. Before anything else, confirm three facts about your machine:
- Keying. NVMe drives use the M-Key edge connector (SATA M.2 drives are B+M key). The slot must accept M-Key. Nearly all modern M.2 slots do, but check your motherboard manual rather than assuming.
- Length. 2280 (80mm) is the standard; some laptops only take 2242 or 2230. A 2280 drive will not fit a 2242 slot. Measure or look it up.
- Interface. An M.2 slot can be SATA-only, NVMe-only, or both. A SATA-only slot will not run an NVMe drive at all — this is the single most common reason a brand-new NVMe drive “doesn’t work.”
When the archive’s late posts (Samsung 970 PRO/EVO, Intel 600p/760P) shipped in 2018, all of this confusion was new. It isn’t anymore — the checklist is the whole game.
The specs that matter
Once it fits, four numbers decide whether an NVMe drive is good for your money:
- DRAM or DRAM-less. Drives with a DRAM cache chip keep their mapping tables in fast memory; DRAM-less drives borrow host memory (HMB) or use the flash itself. For most desktop workloads a well-implemented DRAM-less drive (the modern budget norm) is fine; sustained heavy writes favor DRAM. Don’t pay flagship money for a drive that skimps here, and don’t assume a DRAM-less drive is bad — check reviews for its sustained write behavior.
- Endurance (TBW). Terabytes Written is the warranty endurance figure. 150 TBW per 1TB of capacity is plenty for a consumer drive; the 970 PRO’s ~1,200 TBW is for people who write many terabytes a month. For an OS + games drive, don’t overpay for endurance you won’t use.
- Cache and sustained writes. All modern TLC drives have a fast pseudo-SLC cache that slows after it fills. If you copy 200GB video files all day, this matters a lot; if you boot and game, it barely registers.
- Thermals. Fast PCIe 4.0 drives can throttle under sustained load without airflow. A slim heatsink (or a motherboard’s built-in M.2 heatsink) is cheap insurance; some laptops have none, so read a thermals-focused review before buying a hot drive for one.
The specs that are marketing
- Peak sequential read/write numbers (7,000+ MB/s claims). You will rarely hit them outside benchmarks, and SATA’s 550 MB/s is already fast for boot and apps.
- “Gen5” as an automatic win. PCIe 5.0 drives run hot, cost more, and only help workloads that already saturate Gen4. For almost every PC, a good Gen4 drive is the value sweet spot in 2026.
- Brand “PRO” tiers for gamers. The 970 PRO was aimed at creators and prosumers; a 970 EVO-class drive is indistinguishable in games. Buy the tier your workload earns.
How to buy
The honest process: confirm the slot, set a budget, then pick the cheapest drive from a reputable brand (Samsung, WD, Crucial, Kingston, SK hynix, Solidigm) that has a current, favorable sustained-write and thermals review from a source you trust — not from the marketing page. The old site’s brand categories (Samsung SSD, Intel SSD, …) sorted drives by logo; that is a retailer’s shortcut, not a buying method.
